Living in Sandringham: straight answers
Is Sandringham a good place to live?
Sandringham's town centre is a Special Character Area in the Unitary Plan, described as a largely continuous and intact group of commercial buildings from the 1920s to the 1940s around Kitchener Road and Calgary Street. Gribblehirst Park, 5.9 hectares in the middle of the suburb, has a remnant lava rock forest and playgrounds, and Sandringham Community Centre is at 18-20 Kitchener Road. The council calls Sandringham distinctively Indian in its community focus, and a large number of state houses were built here in the 1930s. Stats NZ counted 11,514 usually resident people at the 2023 Census. The town centre land was once swampland known as Cabbage Tree Swamp.
Which schools serve Sandringham?
These schools are located in Sandringham, according to the Ministry of Education school directory:
- Edendale School (primary)
Living in a suburb does not guarantee a place at its school. Check the school's enrolment zone before you buy, using the Ministry of Education's school zones page and Education Counts' Find your nearest school tool.
How do you get around from Sandringham?
Sandringham Road carries AT's frequent routes 24B and 24R between the suburb and the City Centre via Victoria Street, and AT's timetable data shows route 64 (Newmarket to St Lukes) also using it. A stop named Sandringham Road/Kingsland Station links to Kingsland station, where AT says East West trains go directly for Eden Park. AT proposed changes to Sandringham Road, Mount Eden Road and Remuera Road, and feedback closed on 23 August 2026. On the motorway, NZTA says SH20 through Mt Roskill has interchanges at Dominion Road and Hillsborough Road.
